Having spent virtually all his career working with numbers, Mark Hansen finds himself joining forces with the wordsmiths at Columbia Journalism School. “I feel like a spy in the house of Pulitzer,” he jokes.As East Coast Director of the David and Helen Gurley Brown Institute for Media Innovation at the Journalism School, he works with Emily Bell of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism and J school colleague Susan McGregor to integrate data science into the curriculum and, ultimately, the profession.He also chairs the New Media Center at the Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering. The data sciences institute was created in 2012 in a partnership with New York City.Hansen has a history of visualizing data in unexpected ways.
